The game wasn’t a great one, as Stanford scored in the first play and handily beat Iowa 45-16. But we were excited to be there and experience firsthand the pomp and circumstance of the “Granddaddy of them all.” It was a first for all of us, and a VIP one (thanks again, Glo).
The big blue sky was painted with skywriting, including GEICO marketing, happy new year messages, and the largest and longest one that read “Trump hates everybody but Trump.” The Goodyear blimp floated about throughout the game and, as part of the pre-game show, fireworks shot up and a stealth plane flew past, menacingly large and frightening.
Seated with the Pac-12 side, we were surrounded by Stanford fans, all decked out in red and white and celebrating throughout the game (I wore blue to support the Pac but maintain my loyalty to Cal). Stanford may have won the game, but Iowa won for its fans; the crowd was undeniably yellow and black and cheering for the underdog.
We didn’t really care who won, just happy to be able get easily in and out of the stadium. Thanks to the Pac12 folks for that, and for the lavish food and drink (and kid game room!). A great day and a great way to start the new year.
